Why We Believe Cars Should Be Easy to Fix

Most modern cars are not designed to be repaired. They are designed to be assembled. That might sound strange, but it explains a lot.

When manufacturers design vehicles today, they optimize for factory efficiency, how fast a robot can install a part, not how easy it is for a human to repair that part later. The result is what many mechanics and owners experience every day: simple repairs that require removing half the engine just to reach one component.

We think there is a better way to design machines. Our repair philosophy is simple:

Repairs should be repeatable, simple, and predictable.

Repeatable Repairs

A repeatable repair means that every time you perform a repair, it works the same way.

The same bolt sizes.
The same access points.
The same process.

No hidden fasteners. No one-time-use surprises. No strange tools that only work on one part of the car.

If you replace a component once, you should already know how to replace it the second time. That reduces labor time, reduces mistakes, and makes the entire vehicle easier to maintain over its lifetime.

Simple Repairs

Simple does not mean cheap or poorly built. Simple means logical.

  • Service items should be placed where a human can reach them.
  • Common repairs should not require removing unrelated parts.
  • Tools should be standard and included with the vehicle.
  • If something breaks on the side of the road, the goal is not to make the owner helpless, the goal is to make the problem understandable and fixable.

That’s why we believe every vehicle should ship with a dedicated tool kit designed specifically for that vehicle. The same tools used to build the car should be the tools used to repair it.

Predictable Repairs

Predictable means that the vehicle behaves in a way that makes problems easier to diagnose.

  • If a specific part fails, the symptoms should be consistent.
  • If a hose wears out, it should be a known size and easy to replace.
  • If a component needs replacement, it should be modular and accessible.

Predictable repairs reduce downtime, reduce cost, and reduce frustration. And over time, predictable machines last longer because people are more willing to maintain them properly.

Technology Should Help, But Not Replace, Mechanics

We believe in mechanical machines. But we also believe technology can make those machines easier to understand and maintain. So instead of using technology to hide the machine, we use technology to explain the machine.

For example:

  • Each major component can be labeled and tracked
  • Service history can be logged automatically
  • Diagnostics can be explained in plain language
  • Owners can learn about their vehicle through a mobile app
  • Problems can be detected early and reported to the driver

The goal is not to replace mechanics with computers. The goal is to give drivers and mechanics better information so they can take better care of the machine.

The Big Idea

Most companies design cars to be sold. We want to design cars to be kept. And if you want a machine to last a long time, you have to design it so people can repair it, maintain it, and understand it.

That’s why we believe repair and maintenance should not be an afterthought. It should be part of the engineering from the very beginning. Because a machine that can be repaired easily is a machine that can last forever.

“If you can’t repair your own vehicle, then you don’t really own it.”
